  • DOVE SIAMO Bovino è un piccolo borgo dalle origini antichissime che offre ai visitatori un’atmosfera incantata e fuori dal tempo. Arroccato sull’estremità meridionale del Subappennino Dauno, gode di una posizione strategica che ha dato al paese una grande rilevanza storica.Le sue origini sono antichissime; fu municipio romano e si narra che il condottiero Annibale si sia accampato nei pressi di “Vibinum”. Importanti testimonianze dell’età romana sono i reperti custoditi nel Museo Civico e i resti dell’acquedotto. Crollato l’impero romano, Bovino fu più volte distrutta e ricostruita ad opera di diversi popoli, tra cui i Normanni di Drogone, del quale resta l’imponente torre del Castello ducale. Dopo aver subito diverse dominazioni Bovino divenne stabilmente ducato sotto la famiglia dei Guevara di Spagna,che fecero del castello una ricca ed elegante dimora, vivace centro culturale che ospitò numerosi illustri personaggi, tra cui Torquato Tasso, Maria Teresa d’Austria, Papa Benedetto XIII, Giovan Battista Marino. Dal X secolo Bovino fu sede episcopale: ciò testimonia la sua storica centralità non solo dal punto di vista politico, ma anche dal punto di vista religioso. Simboli della vita religiosa del paese sono il Duomo, magnifico esempio di architettura romanica, ed il santuario di Valleverde, meta di pellegrinaggi in onore dellaMadonna. Il pregio del centro storico è valso alla nostra città l’inserimento tra i Borghi più belli d’Italia. L’ambiente sereno e familiare rende Bovino il posto ideale per chi per turismo, motivi di studio, di lavoro o per curiosità ed interesse personale vuole avvicinarsi alle nostre tradizioni, trascorrendo una vacanza lontana dalle metropoli e dal turismo di massa.

    LOCATION Bovino is a small village of ancientorigins that offers visitors a magical and timeless atmosphere. Perched upon the southern Subappennino Dauno, the town enjoys a strategic position that has given it a great historical importance. Its origins are ancient, itwas a Roman municipality and it is said that Hannibal had an encampment around "Vibinum". Important remains of the Roman age are housed in the Civic Museum and there are remains of an Roman aqueduct. When The Roman Empire collapsed, Bovino was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt by different populations, including the Normans of Drogone, of which the imposing tower of the ducal castle remains . Having undergone several dominations Bovino entered a period of permanent control under the Duchy of the Guevara family of Spain, who transformed the castle into a large and elegant dwelling and made it a vibrant cultural center that housed many illustrious personalities, including Torquato Tasso, Maria Theresa of Austria, Pope Benedict XIII and Giovan Battista Marino. From the tenth century Bovino was the seat of Bishops, which bears witness to its historical centrality not only from a political point of view butalso from a religious perspective. Symbols of the religious life of Bovino are the Duomo, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, and the Valleverde shrine, a destination of pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady. The charm of the old town centre has earned the city an inclusion amongst “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. The serene and homely atmosphere makes Bovino the ideal place for those who for reasons of study, work or personal interest and curiosity want a closer look at Italian traditions, spending a vacation a world away from the cities  and from mass tourism.
